The Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) has the following 11 primary functions:

  1. To recognize qualifications for registration of practitioners under this Act;
  2. To approve post-graduate qualifications to register as dental specialists;
  3. To register and issue certificates to dental practitioners;
  4. To register and issue certificates to dental specialists;
  5. To determine the criteria for registration of dental specialists;
  6. To regulate examinations for registration of dental surgeons;
  7. To regulate the period of compulsory service of dental practitioners;
  8. To regulate the standards of practice of dental practitioners
  9. To regulate the ethics and professional conduct of dental practitioners;
  10. To regulate the scope of practice of practitioners; and
  11. To do such other things as may be required or permitted to do under the Dental Act
